Musky Fishing the High Falls Flowage Crivitz Wisconsin

High Falls Flowage/Caldron Falls Flowage
Trophy Muskie Waters

OCTOBER 11-12, 2008
20th Annual MUSKIE TOURNAMENT

High Falls Flowage has had a long reputation as a quality Musky fishery. To date, the largest Musky was a 51-inch, 50 pounder taken in the Fall of 1986. Since that time, there has been a number of 30+ pound fish taken and a few over 40 pounds. The latest record breaker is a 52-inch, 20 pounder line class record taken in 1993.  Muskies grow fast on High Falls Flowage, due to the unlimited forage base. Suckers and shiners are the preferred forage, although a big muskie will eat anything it wants.

The action starts in the shallow bays like Bass Bay, once the season opens on the last Saturday in May. Twitching six inch crank baits or slammer baits in the fresh weeds works well. Small bucktails are also productive. As summer progresses, heavy weeds push Muskies along the weed lines. Work shallow running crank baits and bucktails parallel to the Woodlawn. Surface baits can be productive at dusk. In September,   jerk baits are the top bait and should be fished on the deeper weed lines. By October, Muskies relate to the rocks. Jerk baits and deep diving crank baits will see the most action. Suckers are also a productive bait in the late fall.
Caldron Falls Flowage is a "Class A" Musky fishery. Twenty pounders are not rare, and each year, a few over 30 pounds are taken. Being a shallow, stained flowage, the water warms quickly in spring. The males will be on the prowl in the fresh cabbage. In this early season, work the cabbage with both bucktails and shallow running crank baits like Crane baits can be easily twitched in the fresh cabbage. Muskies continue to relate to the cabbage weed most of the summer.Surface baits and chartreuse bucktails are hot baits. In fall, work the cabbage with crank baits and jerk baits.By early October, fishing suckers along the drop-offs and along the cabbage weed is productive.
